Enquiry

Self Priming Centrifugal Pump

We received an enquiry from a marine dredging company that required adredging pumpthat would be transferring sea water containing small amounts of sand in order to clear the bed of the harbour ready for ships to pass and dock. They specified to us that the casing material be cast iron to save costs, whilst we normally would always recommend bronze for sea water applications. They required thesea water pumpto be self-priming, have 4” ports and transfer 75m³/hr at 12m head.

Key challenges:

  • Able to handle abrasive sand content
  • Needed to be able to self-prime

Solution

Given the customer's requirements and the fact this was a sea water based application, we immediately knew to select the CAself priming centrifugal pumpfrom ourAzcuerange.

Whilst the customer instructed that to meet their budget they wanted the centrifugal pump to be cast in bronze, we persuaded them to accept a bronze impeller to ensure no sea water corrosion of the part most typical of wear.

In order to cope with the sand within the seawater, we specified a closed impeller than allows for the passing of up to 10% solid content. We also fitted the self priming pump with a hard faced mechanical seal to cope with the abrasive nature of the sand.
